hi sreenu, surely it will be a problem. not that you are not brushing enough but you are doing it for longer time. it is advisable to brush for 2 to 5 mins only. if you brush for longer time then your teeth will get abraded and start getting sensitive issues and later on end up in root canal treatment. so my advice for you is brush twice a day and also lesser time. cheersÂ

Dear Lybrate User, You should brush your teeth for just 3-5 minuites. Over and vigorous toothbrushing does more damage. Your teeth might wear out and you will start having tooth sensitivity issues. Limit your toothbrushing with a soft/ultrasoft toothbrush to a maximum of 5 minutes only. Â

20 minutes brushing will damage your teeth and gums. A proper brushing technique requires just 1 to 2 minutes time, with light handed strokes in up and down motion and a soft tooth brush with any toothpaste. Twice daily or at least before sleep is must to keep good oral hygiene. You need to visit a dentist at 6 months interval to get a professional cleaning. What you might be trying to remove in 20 minutes brushing is calculus which simple brushing cannot. For stains and all still no help. You have to undergo dental treatment and then with your continuous efforts you can maintain it. Â

You need not to brush for 20 minutes. Brush properly and gently for 10 minutes. Use interdental floss to clean up in between the tooth. It is not in how much time you take ; its how you brush your teeth. Â

Dear Lybrate user, spending excess time on brushing or brushing multiple times in a day or brushing vigorously does more harm to the teeth than good. Brushing twice daily with a good fluoride toothpaste, rinsing your mouth after every meal and visiting your dentist at least twice a year is sufficient for maintaining good oral hygiene. Toothpastes contain certain abrasive particles which, if used in excess, might roughen up your teeth. So be careful and do not spend more than 2-3 minutes on brushing otherwise you'll end up wearing off our teeth very soon. Â
