I'm 61 year old 164 cms tall height weighing 90 kgs male. My BP has on an average for last 3 months is 133/84. This I have taken as mathematical average of 11 readings over last 3 months. The reading were taken at 7 am every time. My blood sugar and cholesterol is within limits. I do not smoke but drink occasionally (once a week) that too in moderation. I eat normal food in moderation (no fries or oily/buttered stuff). Is the BP ok under these conditions or should have to go for some other medications. I'm having 5 mg amlodipine daily.

Dear Lybrateuser, - Your BP is OK for your age, if you want to reduce it further without change in medication then you should try to reduce your weight as you are overweight - take dietary precautions & do regular exercise - have more of fibrous foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, beans, lentils, sprouts & nuts - avoid fried, processed & junk foods, salty foods & snacks, pickles, papads - do regular brisk walking for 30-40 min, also do yoga & deep breathing for 5-10 min daily morning to reduce stress & keep your body fit - do not alter your medicine dose or medicine without consulting your doctor.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Your BP has to be maintained around 130/80 mm Hg as you are on treatment. Mathematical average does not give any indication. Secondly you are having grade 1 obesity with a BMI of 33.06 kgs/M2. Your ideal body weight should be 58.5 kgs, which means there is 32.5 kgs extra weight. This is a major contributor for hypertension. Please make specific efforts to reduce weight. Thanks.
