Sphygmomanometer: An instrument for measuring blood pressure, typically consisting of an inflatable rubber cuff which is applied to the arm and connected to a column of mercury next to a graduated scale, enabling the determination of systolic and diastolic blood pressure by increasing and gradually releasing the pressure in the cuff. More than 120 over 80 and less than 140 over 90 (120/80-140/90): You have a normal blood pressure reading but it is a little higher than it should be, and you should try to lower it. Make healthy changes to your lifestyle. This instrument will give accurate blood pressure.

Hello lybrate-user, sometimes the automated bp machine may be at fault .no need to panic. In a period of 6 months check your bp three times and if all those readings are above 140/90 then we might need to start medication for your high bp. This bp 140/100 need not be very significant, could be because of something which is known as white coat hypertension also (bp raises when measured in a doctor's clinic).
