Hi I had one of my tooth filled today. After removing the tooth's decayed portion my dentist asked me to rinse. After that he straight away put the filling material in my teeth without drying my teeth. Isn't it necessary to dry the teeth before filling. Can this be a problem in future. Can decay occur under my filling.

Dear Lybrate User, Well, isolating the tooth from saliva, blood and other oral fluids is a mandatory thing before any permanent restorative material like amalgam, Glass Ionomer Cement or Composite Restoration is placed in a tooth. Failure to follow this protocol, surely compromises the longevity of the restorations (fillings). You can just observe now for any symptoms/failure of the filling and get it re-done, if need be.

Hello, I wonder how you came to know that the tooth should be dried before it is filled. Anyway, it's of course mandatory to dry the caries excavated tooth before filling it. If not, the restoration may not retain for a long period, as it is not bonded to the tooth properly. Hence, there are also chances of secondary caries development.

Drying is necessary to remove all the particles of lodged in the cavity and to use the type of filling required for the tooth... as in type of filling used in the tooth... one removes the decayed portion and then does the filling sometimes the arrested part of cavity is left behind and that usually doesn't cause any problem ...

Dear lybrate user, it is true that almost all dental filling materials are very sensitive to water and moisture while setting/ hardening as water compromises their strength and setting reaction. It dose not cause decay but it can shorten the life of the filling. This is the reason why while doing dental fillings, cotton rolls are kept around teeth to avoid contamination with saliva. Now that the filling is done, you cannot do anything about it but if it comes out, you'll have to get it re-done.
