The medication is a derivative of cellulose with a carboxymethyl group. It is bound to a few of the hydroxyl groups of the glucopyranose monomers that build up the backbone of the cellulose. The salt form of it is used as an eye ointment to treat conjunctivitis. The medicine works by interfering with the growth of the bacteria causing the infection.

This medication is usually not recommended unless absolutely necessary due to its many side effects. It includes bone marrow suppression, diarrhoea and nausea. People with liver or kidney problems may need lower doses. If you have anaemia, liver disease and allergy, then inform your doctor before taking this medicine.
