Hi doctors, Please advise what to eat or not to eat for avoiding high sugar. I am asking for my father. He is 50 years old having 73 kg weight and having 215 mg/DL glucose fasting. And HbA1c is 9.6%. Please advise me with precautions too. My father is taking Cobal-D3, ribpan-D and glimdac-m1 as per physician's instructions.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. From the blood glucose values given it is clear that your father's diabetes is not in control. Ideally FBG should be <100 mg, PP 150 to1 60 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. Therefore, his present treatment is not helping him at all. It needs to be upgraded or needs to be given a relook. As regards the food intake following precautions need to be taken: 1) No sweets, avoid deep fried foods, pastries, bakery items and foods made out of maida. 2) Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits (permitted about 100 g a day), 3) Total caloric intake should be based on his ideal body weight which is 58.5 kgs. 4) Regular exercise for at least 1 hour a day, brisk walking can be a good option. 5) Avoid sweetened aerated drinks (colas), also refrain from alcohol and smoking. Basically a modified lifestyle has to be followed. If you have any doubts then please do come back. Thanks.
