What is the treatment?

The spine is a part of the axial column of the human body and is the backbone of the human body. It consists of vertebra connected with intervertebral disc so as to protect the main nerve connecting the brain the spinal cord. But due to some injury or disc related problems, this spine requires treatment. One such treatment is the Spinal Fusion which is also known as Spondylodesis or Spondylosyndesis.Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure used to correct problems with the small bones in the spine (vertebrae). Spinal fusion is a surgery used to correct the problem with the bones of spines. They are used to join the smaller bones of the spine (vertebrae). It is essential that a surgery be done to cure pain during motion. It is basically a process of joining tiny bones of the spine. Spine has many chambers have a different type of small bones. The surgery can be performed in any chamber of the spine. The surgery joins the smaller bones to become a big bone. There is an issue with this surgery. It can only be performed when the doctor is able to allocate the exact position of pain in the spine. If the doctor is not able to identify the position of the fault, then it is impossible to perform the surgery. The doctor can go fora x-rays, computerized tomography scans and magnetic resonance imaging scans for the identification of the exact location of the pain in the spine. If the location of the pain gets identified then the doctor can go for spinal fusion surgery. The surgery can give relief from many back problems including a tumour, infection, herniated disk, fractured vertebra, spinal stenosis. The surgery can be of great help for the people suffering from back problems. There are many specialists for the spinal fusion surgery. The treatment is quite similar to other surgeries for joining of bones. The surgery is taken into account when the physical therapy has not helped the patient. The various problems that are resolved through spinal fusion are :degenerative disk disease, fractured vertebra, infection , herniated disk

, tumors of the spine, spinal stenosis, etc. The treatment involves the surgery for the joining of the bones. The early procedures for the surgery involve blood tests and other important tests. The patients are said to have certain medicines before the surgery. At the surgery's day, the doctor once again performs some of the tests which include a blood pressure test and sugar level test. If every prospective remains ok then the doctor goes on to perform the surgery. Many of the time its only one doctor who performs the test but if the condition is severe then there may be a team of well qualified and well-experienced doctors. The surgery takes some hours. The patients then after are kept in ICU for some more days. The conditions of the patients are recorded on daily basis. The doctor looks to the progressive record of the patients and gives them the necessary medication if needed. The surgery is quite a big treatment and it takes time. The patients are told not to put pressure on their back and they are given special care.

How is the treatment done?

Spinal Fusion is a surgical process and requires proper planning. The entire procedure of Spinal fusion is as follows: The week before the surgery the patients are requested to have their blood tests and the spinal x-rays. This is a very important procedure before the treatment. By doing this the doctor notes the condition of the patient to undergo the surgery. If the results of the test are not promising then the doctor may ask to abort the surgery. On the surgery's day, everything goes by the plan and the surgery takes place. There must be at least one family member with the patient. This will increase the patient's will and provide moral support. The patient takes time to get recovered. Usually, the patients are advised to stay 4 to 5 days in the hospital. By doing this, patients will get cured more effectively. There are many post-surgery cares that must be taken into account. The surgery may result in some of the complications such as pain, infection and other problems. The doctors will be there to fight with these complications if any. The team for the surgery are generally very qualified, hence there is no need to panic and one should look forward to the surgery. The treatment is done fully with high safety, so that it may not result in any sort of complications.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Patients who are suffering from problems like degenerative disk disease, fractured vertebra, infection, herniated disk, tumors of the spine, spinal stenosis, etc. and whoever has had severe spinal pain are eligbile for the treatment based on the diagoniss of the doctor.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

People who are suffering from only back pain which is treatable via medications are not eligible for the spinal fusion. First, the spinal issue must not be a side effect of any recent surgery you’ve had. In that case, the treatment would be different, you are not eligible for the spinal fusion treatment. Age criteria matters sometimes and the surgery may be delayed for an apporpriate age if the patient is a child. On the other hand the old people may not be prefrred to undergo this surgery. Moreover patients suffering from diseases like auto-immune diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure and those on blood thinners require further treatment before they are to be recommended for the surgery.

Are there any side-effects?

It is actually not called as side effects rather it is termed as complications in this case. There may be some of the complications after the surgery. The doctor is human too and there are chances of not doing the surgery correctly. This results in complications. Some of the complications are bleeding, blood clots, infection, pain and risk from anaesthesia. These all complications can be there but one need not get worried with all these. The doctors are well experienced and they can cope with the situation. There may be other potential problems like nerve injury and tissue rejection. The doctors provide with special medicines to get these problems sorted. It is highly advised to look for well qualified and well-experienced doctors for the surgery as they can cope with post-surgery complication in a better way.In case any patient reports any other complexity after undergoing the treatment the patient is advised to consult the doctor immediately.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

There are some very important things to be taken into the account after the spinal fusion surgery. The patient should stay in the hospital for 4 or 5 days. They must be guided by fro toilets and other works. They should not give pressure on their back. They must eat healthily. They should take the medicines on time. They should not remove any of the injections connected to their body as they are joined to a monitor that will display the heart rate and blood pressure. These all are the precautions that must be taken after the surgery. The patients should take the permission of doctors before going to their home. This will ensure that there are no complications left. Even after reaching home the patients must be taken care of.

How long does it take to recover?

The treatment recovery time varies from the patient condition to condition and differs from the mode of the treatment opted for the patient. The patient will not get cured all of a sudden. After 4 or 5 days they get discharged. At home too they must follow the doctor's prescription and other necessities. The patients are then asked to meet the doctor regularly. After 6 weeks, then after 3 months, then 6 months, then 12 months, then 24 months lastly. It will take this much time to get fully cured. In the early days after surgery, the patients should avoid lifting loads and walking too much. Patients are advised to maintain a sleeping posture as this can put force on the back and can affect the spine and the surgery. So, proper care is a must to maintain it.

What is the price of treatment in India?

The cost is around 350000 INR and it varies due to many factors. There may be an extra charge for medication and extra facilities in the hospital.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Yes, the results are permanent but it takes time. The spinal fusion is a certified surgery and its results are permanent. It works as a joiner of smaller bones and once the bones are joined it is almost permanent unless the patient met with an accident. The results are excellent and many patients have got their spine problems solved by the surgery.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There is practically no alternative for the treatment. Some of the home remedies can give instant relief but for a real treatment, one should go for the spine fusion surgery. Alternatives may only be applicable if the patient does not have any serious complications. But if the patient is not eligible for the treatment (surgery) and still has spine related problem then treatments like heat therapy, acupunture, ayurvedic message therapy etc. can be thought of as an alternative whoch can provide releif from pain and other discomforts.
