What is the treatment?

Skin treatments are designed to get rid of any of the common skin problems that you may be facing. As there are many different types of skin problems that people normally suffer from, there are a variety of treatment types and products that you can choose from. Depending on the type of product, the brand, and the way you use them, these treatments can be fairly effective and can help get rid of your skin problems as quickly as possible.

One of the most common treatment types includes lotions, creams, and moisturizers. These can either be purely cosmetic or have some medicinal components to them to help you deal with issues like dry skin, flaky skin, fungal infections, acne, and blisters. They can either be applied topically or all over the body. Many of these products are available over the counter however some of the stronger ones do require a prescription from a doctor or a dermatologist.

Another common treatment type includes face washes, scubs, masks, and peels. There are meant to be used only on the facial area, as the name suggests, and can help combat a series of skin problems such as dryness, acne, blackheads, clogged pores, dead skin, and even help with the overall pallor of the skin. These are mostly found in drug stores or cosmetic stores and do not require a prescription.

Finally, there are oral medications that can be used in order to combat skin problems. They can come in a liquid form or can be taken as pills and the latter require a prescription more often than not.

How is the treatment done?

Every type of skincare treatment is unique and has different benefits. It is important that one knows what exactly the skincare treatment entails before undergoing it. Here are a few effective skin care treatments:

  • Acne Blue Light Therapy: The therapy makes use of a blue light band to kill bacteria which cause acne. The treatment is very quick and takes about half an hour. No pain is felt when one is exposed to the blue light. It is an effective way to treat light and even moderate acne issues.
  • Chemical peel: This type of treatment uses an acid solution to deal with the outer skin layers. A solution of alpha hydroxyl acid, phenol or trichloroacetic acid is used. It is known to be one of the oldest forms of skincare procedures. A great way to obtain fresh rejuvenated skin, a chemical peel effectively deals with wrinkles, sun damage, and skin pigmentation.
  • IPL photo-facial: The treatment generally takes about half an hour, during which pulsed light is directed towards the skin. It does not cause any discomfort or pain. Photo facial helps get rid of freckles, wrinkles and deals with sun damage. It also eliminates enlarged pores and brown spots on the skin.
  • Laser skin resurfacing: This procedure involves the use of a laser which breaks the molecular bond of the damaged skin cells and makes skin smooth. It is also commonly known as a laser peel. It gets rid of outer skin layers that have been damaged. It also helps in effective collagen production that keeps skin healthy by strengthening it.
  • Laser skin tightening: This procedure also makes use of a laser to tighten the skin. The light of the laser heats the skin, thus stimulating the production of collagen. Great for wrinkle removal.
  • Microdermabrasion: This treatment helps in reducing age spots and also removes acne scars. During this procedure, an instrument is used to spray minute crystals on the skin surface. These crystals exfoliate the skin effectively.
  • Thermage: A non-exfoliating skin treatment, it uses heat to tighten the skin. It effectively improves the face and neck contours.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

No matter what your skin type is, you are eligible to seek treatment to make it better. Most products that are designed to improve your skin do not require a prescription and are available in cosmetic stores. If you are uncertain about your skin type and the products that will suit it, you can always consult with a dermatologist to understand the most effective way to go about treating your skin.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

If your skin problems are being caused by a disease or condition like eczema or allergies, then you are not eligible to seek treatment through the measures mentioned above. The solution for you is to treat the disease that is causing your skin to break out rather than just slathering on products to beautify your skin. In the case of allergies, staying away from the allergen is the main solution while people with eczema usually have to use medicated products and treatments.

Are there any side effects?

As is the case with most products, there are certain side effects that you should be vary of. It is important to note that many cosmetic products are laced with chemicals that may lead to harsh side effects such as a rash, breakout, or pigmentation on the skin. It is always better to choose organic products for your skin as they can treat your problems without intensifying them and have ingredients that are good for you. Furthermore, if you use products that are not intended for your skin type, the main side effect is that your problem might become more pronounced. For instance, if you already have acne prone oily skin, then using facial oils that are designed to add more moisture and natural oils to your skin will not benefit you. Rather, it will make your skin oilier and even more prone to acne. If you are unsure of your skin type or have combination skin, consult with a dermatologist.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

With skin care, even after you have successfully treated your skin and gotten rid of the problems, the main trick it to continue to treat it and take care of it. This is because your natural skin type does not change after treatments and you may still be prone to the same problems you had before. Another important post treatment guideline is to watch your diet. What you eat tends to show up on your skin and you should therefore eat healthy, organic foods. Drinking alcohol too often can dry your skin and lead to large pores while smoking can age your skin significantly and even make it look ashy. Furthermore, choose your makeup wisely and stick to herbal or organic products.

How long does it take to recover?

Most skin treatments begin taking effect the minute you use them however, you can only discern their full effect once you have completed a month of using them. This is because they take a while to take effect. If you choose organic and herbal treatments, they usually take a while, while products with strong chemicals tend to act quicker but are ultimately more harmful.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Most products for skin care range from Rs. 150 – Rs 300. However, there are also high end brands and products available that can cost over Rs 1000 and beyond. Many brands that boast of ayurvedic ingredients can be frightfully expensive.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

As long as you follow your skin treatment to the letter and ensure that you are taking care of your diet, the results of the treatment can be permanent. However, since your natural skin type cannot magically change, once you stop using the products or go back to eating unhealthily, it can begin to reflect on your skin and your problems may occur again.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There are many home remedies available to treat skin. For instance, if you have acne prone skin, you can use a face mask made of turmeric and honey. Turmeric has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help get rid of pimples while the honey lightens the scars they leave behind. Similarly, a scub with oats, yoghurt, and honey also helps for the same problem. Using a cold compress to temporarily relieve yourself of any inflammation caused by irritation on your skin or extreme itching can also help. Certain types of essential oils that have anti-inflammatory properties can also be used to massage onto your skin to relieve yourself of the symptoms. Lavender oil, lemon oil, and clove oil are good options to consider.
