Eyelid swelling: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

What is the treatment?

Periorbital puffiness

How is the treatment done?

Eyelid swelling occurs when there is an inflammation on the lid of your eyes and when an excess fluid called edema covers the area around the eyes. Eyelid swelling happens when there is an eye infection or injury. It can also be a sign that the power in your eyes has increased. Allergies can also be another reason for the swelling on the eyelid. This condition can be pain or non-painful depending on the reason behind the problem. Getting a treatment becomes important as a swelling on the eyelid can also seriously threaten your eye-sight and cause problems like orbital cellulitis and even ocular herpes.

When the swelling keeps worsening or the pain does not seem to reduce, you need to get your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist. Your doctor may prescribe eye drops to help reduce the pain. If the condition is not very severe then you can use certain home remedies to help get rid of the problem. The first thing which any optometrist will suggest is to avoid rubbing your eyes as the infection or injury might just increase. Cool compression can sometimes help reduce the swelling. Certain medications can also help when recommended by the doctor.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Eyelid swelling can be seriously dangerous for your eyes and should therefore be taken seriously. If the pain and the swelling does not reduce after a few days on its own then seeing an optometrist becomes important. Depending on the nature and cause of the problem, your doctor might suggest different medications and eye drops. In severe cases, a minor surgery may also be required.

when the swelling is largely because of a type of allergy then doctors may suggest an oral allergy medication or an antihistamine eye drop. Mild steroid eye drops may occasionally be suggested by doctors, depending on the need. In cases where the swelling occurs due to an infection, anti-inflammatory eye drops, antibiotics or certain eye drops can help reduce the swelling and the pain. You can try taking allergy shots or oral medications as a treatment. You should also make sure to stay indoors in order to avoid any other kind of eye problems.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Any individual who is facing issues of eye irritation where the need to scratch your eyes improves disturbingly, becomes extremely sensitive to light, sees an excessive production of tears or sees a redness on the eyelid should get themselves checked.

Are there any side effects?

Individuals who do not have any kind of irritation on their eyes or cannot feel any pain on the eyelids are not eligible for the treatment.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

There are certain side effects to eye drops as it can temporarily cloud your vision and create some visual disturbances. In case of any kind of allergy make sure to mention that to your doctor before taking any medication or drops.

How long does it take to recover?

Patients need to be very careful about not rubbing or scratching their eyes after completing the treatment. You should prefer staying indoors for a couple of days in order to protect your eyes from the dust and pollution.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

It does not take very long for the swelling to reduce after the treatment. You need to continue the medication for a week or two and avoid rubbing your eyes to help your eye heal. A minimum of a week is needed for your eyes to get back to normal.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

The eye drops which your optometrist might suggest can start from Rs 50. The doctor’s consultation, on the other hand, may come up to Rs 500.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

The results are permanent once you are done with the treatment. However, you have to be very careful about not letting your eyes come in contact with dust. You need to be aware of the allergies you have in order to avoid a similar condition in the future.
