My mother is 60 years old, I want to check for cancer of any type for her, she is not capable of sustaining gastroscopy, is there any test available to check for cancer other than gastroscopy. She is suffering from acidity a lot.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help for your mother. Well, that she has severe acidity does not necessarily mean that she has cancer. It possibly has a bearing on her dietary patterns, lifestyle, stress levels and also any medications she may be taking presently. Nevertheless, I would advise you to meet up a gastroenterologist at the earliest. He/ she would require examining her clinically and recommend treatment accordingly. At the same time, I would suggest that she streamline her diet and lifestyle and relax/ de-stress on a regular basis. Taking more of wheat grain cereals, fresh fruits & leafy greens and ensuring that the food is well cooked, bland yet tasty & easily digestible helps. Hot, chilly, spicy & oily & greasy hard to digest foods are best avoided. Also, restrict intake of tea, coffee, alcohol, and other high calorie foods like carbonated sugary drinks, packaged juices, sweets, pastries et al. It is good to take smaller amounts of food in regular intervals rather than taking three large meals. Sitting in ‘Vajrasana’ post every meal, helps digest better. Drink plenty of fluids, at least 8 – 10 glasses of water daily and avoid taking water intermittently while eating as this will hamper effective digestion of food. Brisk walk for at least 30 to 45 minutes, 5 to 6 days a week, unless you have any other health issue or advised otherwise by your doc. Amla, ginger, mint, tulsi, ripe banana, cold milk etc also help arrest acidity & associated issues. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best. Sincerely

There is no single test to detect all types of cancer. A gastroscopy is to assess the stomach, a colonoscopy is to assess the large intestine (colon). A mammography is used to assess breast cancer. An ultrasonography is used to assess the abdomen and pelvis for ovarian and uterine tumours. A good option would be to get a health check up done which has cancer screening protocols.
