Is it myth or fact that one has to take medicine for lifetime even after being cured? My niece, age 12, even after all the report normal she got fits after taking medicine for one month, now doctor has switched the medicine to levera 500. Please guide.

Hello, Its a myth that epilepsy medicines have to be taken life long as a sweeping statement. Let me explain to you in simple terms Epilepsy has many kind of different types of conditions, the classification of epilepsy is very wide.there are many different type of epilepsies and are classified on the basis of their clinical presentation and EEG findings. Once appropriate medicine i started in correct doses majority of the epilepsies can be fully controlled some may require life long medicine while others can be stopped after a seizure free period of 2-3 years. So the first thing will be to classify her Epilepsy, give appropriate medicine in correct doses and avoid factors precipitating seizures. So if Levera fits all the parameters then she should be OK
