I am 76 years old, diabetic for the last 25 years, underwent bypass surgery for multiple artery block, (no heart attack) and have B P for the last 3 years. My diabetes and BP are in very good control. Test results yesterday HBA1C 6.8,Creatinine 0.78, Lipid profile very good parameters, Only HDL low, being 34. Medicines 9 units of insulin (30/70) before BF, glimy 0-1 mg- 2 mg, for BP lesser 50 mg and Carvedilol 3.125 mg twice a day. I have ED for the last 20 years and I want to take treatment meant for ED now. My questions: is treatment for ED safe at my age, which treatment is best, surgery or oral, what is the cost of treatment, where do I get the best treatment, is it covered by insurance? Please advise.

Hello, Thanks for your query on Lybrate "As" per your clinical history is concerned treatment for ED depends upon exact cause only so take medications as advised by your Doctor and adjust your HBA1C level below 6 by increasing your insulin dose and follow few lifestyle modifications like this - 1)Eat healthy foods. Choose foods lower in fat and calories and higher in fiber. Focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. 2)Get more physical activity. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate physical activity a day. Take a brisk daily walk.If you can't fit in a long workout, break it up into smaller sessions spread throughout the day. 3)Lose excess weights. If you're overweight, losing even 7 percent of your body weight can reduce your sugar. To keep your weight in a healthy range, focus on permanent changes to your eating and exercise habits. Hope that helps and at this age and after bypass, it is not advisable for any surgical treatment for ED.
