Had blood test and fasting blood sugar is 220. Ate a lot of sweets a day before the test. Started exercise and healthy diet but too scared to take the test again. Is the blood sugar high due to sweets that I ate a day before the test or I have diabetes.?

The very fact that your fasting blood sugar level is high and you are suffering from Diabetes mellitus. You should get your blood sugar PP level checked and also get HbA1c done. You may have to undergo some investigations to know the base level. The tests required are Haemogram, LFT KFT and TFT. You should immediately consult your family physician for better understanding of the disease and treatment. In the mean time you should take low carbohydrate and high fibre. Start doing physical exercise in a graded way.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. In a normal person (without diabetes), eating extra sweets or sugar is unlikely to cause an increase in the blood glucose. This because insulin present in the body takes care of that extra intake. But if there is a lack of insulin then blood glucose level will go up if one takes more sugar. Instead of getting scared, it is better to do a fasting and after food blood glucose level as well as HbA1c%, to clear all the doubts. Thanks.
