Hello Lybrate user, if you do not brush properly, a soft layer of food (plaque) that we eat is deposited over our teeth surface. This layer can easily be removed by brushing. If not removed for few days this plaque becomes hard (calculus) and cannot be removed with tooth brush only. These plaque and calculus is responsible for infection of gums and gradually leads to recession of gum level. The protocol for treating such cases are a course of antibiotic and antibacterial mouthwash followed by ultrasonic scaling (cleaning) and root planing. By this procedure we reduce the infection of gums and the level gums becomes stable provided the oral hygiene is maintained properly. Reversal of the level of gums to it's original level is difficult and needs a minor surgery. A periodontist (specialist for gum disease) is the best person to do the surgery. By medication the infection will be suppressed for few weeks, but it will relapse again unless it is properly treated. Hope this helps.

Receding gums usually happen due to presence of tartar /deposit on teeth.. and that needs to be cleaned .. when seen clinically at times there is no deposit over the gums but there is deposit below the gums which is not visible to eyes ... and in such cases there is bleeding gums as well .. in such a situation we need to do deep cleaning ..and root planning .... and at times only recession of gums is seen without deposit in such cases there are advanced surgical procedures done such as flap surgeries to cover the part that has receded ...
