Colitis is a severe condition of the stomach that can be quite chronic and includes the inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach. Colitis treatment is essential for individuals who seem to experience stomach pain along with cramping and loose motions. Often, you might notice that there is stool in the blood too. The cause of the problem ranges from inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) to ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis too. A gastroenterologist would offer the relevant treatment after doing a series of tests and scans. These include X-ray, USG, and even colonoscopy and endoscopy in some cases.
Usually the general course of treatment for colitis includes determining the colitis symptoms and providing the appropriate diet for colitis / colitis medication. The medication usually continues for weeks till the overall problem along with symptoms subside. This can also take longer in some cases. Very rarely is surgery required but in critical cases, it may be needed. Also, throughout the medication phase a very strict diet is followed, which eliminates very spicy foods or ones that worsen the inflammation and the pain in the stomach.
Once the colitis causes have been identified and the source of treatment determined, you should feel that the pain and the swelling is going away. This is followed with a collagenous colitis diet that may be continued for a few weeks post the surgery to ensure complete healing.
