Uman atrophic gastritis develops in two basic forms. The first is a diffuse corporal gastritis characterized by loss of pari- etal and chief cells and hyperplasia of the antral gastrin cells and corpus enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells. The mucosa of the gas- tric antrum is neither inflamed nor atrophic. This gastritis is associated with pernicious anemia, and has been attributed to an autoimmune cause (1, 2). The second form of atrophic gastritis is multifocal gastritis that begins at the antro-corpus junction (3). Severe forms of this gastritis usually involve the entire antrum, and may extend proxi- mally into the corpus, although the proximal greater curvature is usually spared. The human form of multifocal atrophic gastritis has been associated with Helicobacter pylori infection combined with an antioxidant-deficient diet rich in salt or nitrate (4). Neu- roendocrine hyperplasia is not a feature of this type of gastritis.
