My father had a root canal treatment. It is been 16 days, he is not able to open mouth beyond a half finger. Really, it is painful for us in the family now. Could you please suggest what to do now? I would be grateful to you.

Advise full mouth opening, ballooning exercise & side to side movement of the jaw. Wrap 25 to 30 ice-cream sticks, make a bundle, put it between upper & lower front teeth for 15 minutes thrice a day increase 1 sticks each day.

Hello Lybrate user. Usually after root canal treatment, patients will not feel difficulties in mouth opening. I advice you to take antibiotic and pain killers for three days. Give warm pack extraorally around the tooth site. Take warm water and salt rinse twice a day for three days. Do mouth opening exercises. Then take an xray of the teeth and consult me. it is not because of RCT seems he has undergone RCT for lower back tooth for which L.A. is injected near the angle of jaw which is known as Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block.... This is the site which must be paining and the jaw opening is restricted.... tell him to do warm saline gargles 3 to 4 times a day... it will subside slowly by itself... can take muscle relaxants s.o.s. too

this usually happens in rare cases when lower teeth is involved. plz wait for 10 days more and it will subside on its own.
