The Apicoectomy treatment is a great surgical option when the regular modes of treatments for dentistry procedures don't work. This is a treatment that is done by the dentist and is basically a root end surgery, which is called apicoectomy (apico- + -ectomy). It is also termed as root resection, retrograde root canal treatment or even orthograde root canal treatment or root-end filling. In this endodontic surgical procedure the tip of the tooth's root is removed. The root end cavity is the prepared and filled using a biocompatible material. There are some different ways through which the process is done including root resection / Microsurgical endodontics.
The entire treatment process depends on the extent of the canal required. For example, in case there is are more than one teeth involved than 2-3 sittings could be required. Each sitting takes about 1-3 hours. Anaesthesia is also applied here. Other surgical methods that are less time consuming include microsurgical technique. Some of these are dental operating microscope, micro instruments, ultrasonic preparation tips and calcium-silicate based filling materials.
After the retrograde root canal treatment / endodontic surgical procedures, the pain experience in the teeth would be gone. Usually, there is a very painful sensation when you chew or eat anything from the infected or affected teeth and post this treatment, none of those issues would exist anymore. You can resume regular eating 1-2 days post the therapy.
