Hi! My sister gave a birth to baby boy on 14.8.17 after almost ten hours of birth baby passed his stool and thereafter for three consecutive days baby passed his stool twice or thrice times a day. To our surprise for the last 4 to 5 days baby is not passing stool at all though urinating normally. Even we gave formula milk two times a day (40 ml) and the baby has been on regular intervals of two hours breast feed too. It has become major concern for us why the baby is not passing stool.

It's normal if baby is otherwise playful, not irritable, stomach is soft, no vomiting, accepting feeds well. 40 ml of formula is unusual, usually we prepare in multiples of 30 ml (1ounce) as per recommendation, if you are not following proper instructions while preparing formula milk, please ?read the method of preparing formula mentioned on package and follow accordingly.

It is normal for babies to pass stool multiple times in a day or once in few days. If no vomiting, excess crying etc you should not worry for passing stool. Don't give formula milk for passing stool. Child should be exclusively breast fed for 6 months until unless contraindicated as per physician. Breastfed babies have loose stool of golden yellow color and frequency may vary from multiple stools a day (may be after every feed) or once after few days.

Hello lybrate-user. Congrats for little bundle of joy. Breastmilk is easy to digest and 100 %used by body so it is not common for breastfeed babies to pass stool even once in a week. So if baby is passing urine 6-7 times a day and is otherwise comfortable don't worry about stool. Try to avoid formula and give exclusive breastfeeding as latter has many health benefits.
