Ulcers may be caused by NSAIDs like ibuprofen, excessive acid content,Zollinger- Ellison Syndrome, and infection caused by the bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. There may be many symptoms of ulcers, such as intense pain in the stomach, nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, frequent burping and unexplained weight loss. Barium X Rays and endoscopy are commonly used to diagnose the problem. Endoscopic biopsies may also be prescribed. There are some factors which increase the likelihood of developing an ulcer, such as smoking, consumption of alcohol regularly, family history of ulcers and hypercalcemia. Antacids and antibiotics are helpful in treating ulcers. Scientists are yet to decipher why those with Type A blood are more likely to develop ulcers.
