Dear Ms. lybrate-user, the most common reason for teeth breaking off into pieces is usually caries (cavities) on roots or inbetween teeth that go undetected over a long period of time. This may or may not cause any pain. Nevertheless, to confirm the diagnosis and to get subsequent treatment, you should see your nearest dentist. The dentist, after proper examination, will detail you whether there are multiple cavities or some congenital teeth disorder. Hope it helps.
Regards.

Hey there, get x-rays done for the teeth and if they can be saved, get rct done and cap/crown for the teeth. If cannot be saved then get them extracted and get removable or fixed prosthesis. Visit your dentist regularly to avoid gum infection and caries in other teeth and get them treated in an early stage only.
Get full mouth x-ray also and for personal consultation use my doctors code gm2c5d.

A permanent tooth which has been broken needs to be assessed to see if its still alive. This will involve tests and radiographs at subsequent visits. If its still alive, the roots may be encouraged to grow by a process called apexogenesis. If its dead, a process called apexificati...more
