My dad aged 59 years met with an accident and his ribcage got fractured and also there is swelling in shoulder bone .How long it takes for it to cure? Does bed rest alone can cure fracture? Its been a week ,and doctor has given him chest belt and shoulder belt .He has advices him to wear it when he sits or stand. Today he is telling that he is having very less hearing capacity in one ear .he can hear very less .Another ear hearing is fine .Is it necessary to show him to some ENT?

Fractures take upto 6-8 weeks to heal. Yes usually rib cage fractures will heal on its own with rest n ribcage belts. N pain killers as required for pain. Hearing problem is unrelated to fracture. Though it may be due to medicine side effect or injury to some ear part inside during accident which went unnoticed earlier. Advisable to show to ENT.

Dear lybrate-user, it is difficult to tell the time for healing the fractured of rib normally its take a month, take bed rest is the only way for healing and avoid weight lifting and prone lying and avoid bending. Do breathing exercises and do Spiro meter exercise. Regarding shoulder ,xay done for shoulder joint or not if there is only swelling then no need for shoulder belt. Do hot fermentation.
