I am suffering from bipolar disorder and I am taking medicines from 3.5. Years continuously. Earlier it was treated as only depression because my psychiatric did not examined that. I judged by myself that I am suffering from bipolar disorder and told the doctor. I am taking medicines of bipolar disorder from 5 months but I am not satisfied with it. But the doctor is best as of my reach in the 150 km radius circle or zone. As I describe my symptoms to doctor he adds tablets in every visit. He does not discuss about the disease and I am always curious to know about my medicines and about disease. I am loosing hope and feeling helpless. What can I do in these conditions? Can I live a normal life? For how much time I have to take medicines?

First of all get yourself assessed for bipolar disorder through a Psychometric test. Also along with medicine, you need to go for psychotherapy sessions.

Bipolar disorder is a type of mental disorder, characterized by fluctuation of mood, energy & activity levels that affects a person?s normal day to day functioning. It is an episodic illness where the affected person gets cycles of elevated mood termed mania or hypomania & low mood termed depression. That you were treated for depression initially indicate the possibility of your initial episodes being depressive episodes. If you doubt your diagnosis & treatment, you may take a second opinion of another Psychiatrist & get yourself re-evaluated. Treatment is long term for this condition. There are various medicines available for this disorder along with psychotherapy. It is very necessary that you adhere to treatment & stay under regular supervision of your doctor, as treatment will be modified from time to time based on your state. Do not stop treatment on your own without advice from your attending doctor. & if you have any query regarding your symptoms or treatment, talk openly with your doctor. You can definitely lead a normal life. Take the following measures along with taking medicines regularly & in time: ?Educate yourself adequately about the illness: its coarse, symptoms, treatment, also regarding the various myths associated with this type of illness. Understand the illness properly. ?Accept the fact that the illness is in you, & try to keep it under control by following your doctor?s advice. ?Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Go for a walk, exercise regularly, do some yoga or relaxation techniques daily. Eat healthy diet. ?Lead an active life & follow a daily routine. Give time to your hobbies if any. ?Stay positive & optimistic about life & spend time with friends, family members or well wishers with whom you feel comfortable & positive. ?If any stress if there in your life, go for stress management, as stress may trigger your illness. ?Sleep adequately & avoid sleep deprivation. ?Avoid alcohol & other substances of abuse. Stay positive, do not loose hope. With proper intervention definitely the illness will be under control & you will lead a normal healthy life.
