My wife age 25 years has a problem of recurrent depressive disorder, severe episode with psychotic symptoms. She has this problem since 2006. I want to know that this disease is hereditary. And is it curable or not. And what about the chances of re- episode in future.

Your wife's condition sounds serious and she has to be on medication and counseling simultaneously for a long time. It can be due to hereditary factors and that can be checked out from her family of origin. If she wants to avoid recurrence and wants to come off of medication, she will need to be on an optimum dose and in counseling and if she is episode-free for three continuous years, she can look at coming off of the medication under the strict guidance of the doctor. Since she is young, the prognosis is good subject to cooperation. If she does not cooperate, some pressure needs to be used. Please seek the guidance of the doctor in all these matters.

Dear lybrate-user, As the name suggests, it is going to be recurrent. Since there are chances of re-episode, your psychiatrist must have prescribed some long term treatment for her. It will postpone the next episode, it will lessen the severity and also it will increase the normal period. We can not say whether it is heredity or not - but it runs in families. So please identify the disease at the earliest in your children and treat it promptly. About cure, I can not say anything. Doctors don't cure diabetes or BP or hypothyroid. They only care and keep the disease under control with long term medicines. Same with recurrent depressive disorder.
