My son is 3.5 year old and having cavities in his teeth. I consult to local dentist. He suggested to do 3d scan of jaw. So we do the test. After checking the report doctor told to do root canal of 8 teeth. Four no of front and other 4 are rear tooth. So my worry is that, can we go for root canal treatment and there is no effect of this treatment on his permanent teeth later. Please suggest. There is no child specialist at my town.

If rct is required pl go ahead with that in fact if you don't than permanent teeth can get affected loosing milk tooth at early age has many ramifications you may send a pic of the 3d scan of jaw you have got done to visualise the situation better.

Hello sir, I understand your concerns. No root canal treatment will not harm his permanent teeth buds. Infact not taking proper treatment will do harm to permanent teeth. In such situations the infection from primary teeth can reach the permanent tooth bud which lies under the milk /primary teeth and lead to discoloration of permanent teeth. You must get the teeth treated as advised by your doctor. Hope this helps you.

Sir, I would definitely recommend you to go ahead with root canal treatment which in children is known as pulpectomy, it's a very similar procedure but will allow his teeth to stay in his oral cavity till his permanent teeth erupts. This root canal treated will normally exfoliate n you need not worry about that. Probably the doctor will also recommend for a cap (crown) on these tooth after treatment. As these teeth have high chances of fracture after treatment. So I will also recommend you to place caps on these treated teeth. I would also ask you to get it treated by a pedodontist (child specialist). If its not available locally I would suggest you could go to dental college (private or got) wherein they will definitely have a department for pediatric children. Moreover as your child is very small other necessary measures would be required. This could only be provided by doctors who are equipped for the same.

A dentist is best judge to answer your query. When dentist advised for RCT, he must be sure that it is not going to harm permanent teeth. Pediatrician may not be much helpful in this regard.

Hello lybrate-user, no there is no side effct of RCT i.e root canal treatment on d permanent teeth of d child. Infact you should go for the treatment so as to save the primary tooth from extraction before time. As permanent dentition startz erupting at the age of 6, till the time you need to take care of permanent dentiotion.

Dear lybrate user, carious milk teeth affect the developing permanent teeth which are presently inside the jaw near the roots of milk teeth. Infection from milk terth can damage them so it's very crucial to get them treated for proper permanent teeth and jaw growth. Go aead with the treatment. Your kid has to carry on with these teeth for another 6-7 years.

Hello As per your description, I think your son has nursing bottle caries, which is a common occurrence in children with a prolonged history of bottle feeding and irregular brushing habits. There's nothing to worry about. Root canal treatment will save you son's milk/deciduous teeth till the time the permanent ones erupt, that is around 6-7 years of age for upper front teeth. This will help him maintain proper diet through his growth phase. However, I may suggest here that this should be done by a specialist or MDS because this is a child's first exposure to prolonged dental treatment and can hamper his behavior towards dental treatment for kife. Please consider nearby areas like Chandigarh for the same if there's no one in your town.

no it doesn't effect permanent tooth. in children its called direct pulpotomy and not root canal treatment. Root canal are done on permanent tooth and not decidous one. Direct pulpotomy is painless procedure and at times is done with out local anesthetia. The procedure doesn't affect shedding of milk tooth

Root canal for milk teeth is called pulpectomy. It is safe procedure and do not interfere with eruption of permanent teeth.

If 3d scan shows teeth are exposed that is the carries is up to pulp. Then RCT is compulsory. If RCT is not done then permanent teeth vl have definitely adverse effect.

These type of cases are called as ECC (early childhood caries) patients. No. Of teeth are involved. Go ahead with pulpectomy followed by crowns. As milk teeth (primary) teeth guides the pathway for erupting permanent teeth. So it is mandatory.

RCT of milk teeth is safe and has no bad effect on permanent teeth if done properly. Dentist should be efficient and experienced in handling small kids.
