Is it right to tie cloth tightly on stomach after delivery to keep tummy trim it is just a myth, or is there any other solution to keep stomach flat after delivery.

New mothers are asked to “tie” their stomachs using a cloth, a corset, a maternity belt (also known an abdominal belt) or a tummy binder. When you are pregnant, your body, especially the tummy area, opens up so much as the uterus and abdominal walls stretch to accommodate the growing child. Fat also accumulates in this area. Once the baby is delivered, these muscles do not contract immediately, nor does the fat disappear – giving the mother a ‘still 7 months pregnant’ look and loose flabby abdominal walls. A maternity belt (or even a long piece of cloth like saree) is used to tie your belly tightly so as to give support to the abdominal organs and muscles. This also helps the organs that are loose to get back to their positions.

To keep the abdomen flat after delivery post natal exercises are there. It can be started after 6 weeks of normal delivery or 12 weeks after Caesarian delivery. It can be learnt from maternity physiotherapist or your obstetrician herself can teach you. There is no harm in tieing a cloth but don't tie too tightly.

Abdomen muscles are stretched to give space to baby. After delivery the skin and muscles will take some time to regain old shape. Hence a belt /cloth is used post delivery as support. It also supports the back. However it does not reduce any fat. It does not make the stomach flat. To keep your stomach flat..you must eat sensibly before and after delivery and keep your weight in normal levels. In Indian households they tell you to 'Eat for 2 people' and give you food for 5 people... that's why mothers put on excess weight which becomes difficult to remove. So. You got to eat for just 1.25 people(Not 2).. that is enough to take care of baby before and after delivery. Eat nutritious diet. Consult a dietician who will help you. Prevention(of kgs) is better than cure.
