Individuals vary in their response to an environmental insult. In some people, the reaction is prolonged as well as intense - this seems to be the situation with you. So if we are able to pass the time following an incident by distracting ourselves, after few hours/ days, the incident will no longer bother us. So we have to have an escape plan before hand. You will have to plan what exactly you are going to do to distract yourself if faced with a similar situation again. This could be in the form of taking a walk, reverse counting, listening to music, going to the gym and so on. It will need some practice but will work.
