Any food ingested travels through oesophagus ie. Food pipe which propels food swallowed into a bag called stomach. Oesophagus for all practical purpose is only a passage and no acid is secreted there. On the other hand stomach is a bag and inner layer secretes hydrochloric acid among other digestive enzymes for various reasons this inner surface becomes fragile and inflamed red causing burning pain and other symptoms gastritis is organic medical description whereas acidity is a situation caused by excess acid in stomach as described by a common person. This problem may extend upwards and downawards causing same complaints and is called acid peptic dyspepsia.
