My daughter age 16, have constipation, abdominal pain, nausea for 2 months….upper belly swells a little after eating. Abdominal x-ray shows impression: few air-fluid levels in right lower quadrant with adjacent calcification. Findings could relate to localized inflammatory process. Consider ultrasound if appendicitis is under concern. What does it mean? What is the treatment?

X ray is one of the investigation tests for the complaints your daughter has. Report says possibility of localised inflammation meaning some swelling of structures on right lower part and air- fluid levels which are localised. Appendix is located in that area. It is for a treating doctor - preferably a general surgeon to take a note of complete medical history of your daughter, clinical findings after systematic examination like inspection, palpation, auscultation with stethoscope, other tests done like blood count etc. Then decide whether x ray report is of any significance in further management of the case. Examining surgeon forms his opinion of a provisional diagnosis followed by a final diagnosis. Then decides on treatment plan. Treating surgeon will be ideally in a best position to clearly explain his impression in this case.
