Hello lybrate user, ankle ligament injuries occur after a twisting injury to the angle. Care to be taken mainly depends on how severely injured the ligaments are. Minor sprains can be treated with rest for a few days and painkillers. Moderate grade injuries might require rest for atleast a week, painkillers, ice fomentation, limb elevation and toe movements and sometimes immobilization in a plaster. Severe grades injuries require more than 2 to 3 weeks of rest with immobilization in a plaster restricting ask activities, painkillers anti inflammatory drugs along with above measures. Once you have given the ligament adequate time to heal, your rehabilitation program starts in a graded manner to regain the range of movement and strengthen the muscles. If there was no relief for more than 1 or 2 weeks, you might as well go for an x ray to rule out a fracture. However, if the injury was quite severe, you could go for an x ray immediately. Consult an orthopaedic surgeon for clinical assessment and further management if you continue to have problems for more than 2 to 3 days. Hope this helps.
