Regards Lybrate user. Is she taking any current medications that were prescribed after surgery? Did the swelling in the lips occur suddenly or over a period of time? Is there any other changes in her bowel movement patterns? The lower lip swelling may not be directly related with the hip surgery. Occasionally, medications taken after surgery may have side effects or may interact with regular medicines (if she was taking them before surgery). It is recommended to consult the surgeon or a general physician to ascertain why the lower lip tends to swell. As far as her eating concerns, does she have any concern with bowel movements (e.g. Constipation). Slowed bowel movements are common after surgery due to some pain medications' effects, and also reduced mobility. People usually do not move much after having surgery, so the effect of gravity / muscle forces on the abdomen tends to reduce, leading to slowed bowel movements. If the difficulty eating food is associated with bowel concerns, it is essential to have constipation addressed as soon as possible. Kindly consult with a general physician on the same. Try to have her walk as tolerated (with a walker), as per the recommended weight bearing instruction provided by her surgeon to help the bowel movements get better. She may also perform exercises in lying position like straight leg lift, bending the leg as tolerated (per surgeon's instructions), changing positions often, spend more time sitting rather than lying as other strategies to help move bowels.
