Hi. I'm a medical student. My mother is suffering from foot pain from 4 years. The xray is clear. I think it is plantar fasciitis as per the pain she is getting. The point of pain calcaneal region (heel and mid-foot). What is the course of treatment? The pain decreases with icing and elevation.

Hello Lybrate user, pain in calcaneal region with a normal x-ray has a differential diagnosis. Plantar fascitis on an x-ray can show some sort of thickening, cortical irregularities and abnormalities in the fat pad. But in most patients, it may not show up on x-ray. Your mother should get a usg/ mri to rule out other possibilities (calcaneal stress fracture, calcaneal apophysitis, nerve entrapments, etc). For the time being, the following may relieve her pain: 1. Physiotherapy 2. Stretching the arch of the foot 3. Supportive footwear 4. Cold compress 5. Medication (nsaids) kindly consult with an orthopedic doctor.
