Mr Harendra Kumar, Thyroid is a normal gland present in all of us. It produce a hormone called thyroxine which is essential for brain development, almost every single metabolic activity in the body. Deficiency of thyroxine hormone causes hypothyroidism and excess cause hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a more common condition. It is recognised by increased level of TSH in blood and reduction in T4 and T3 hormones. A blood test helps us to detect this. Symptoms of hypothyroidism are : Weight gain, intolerance to cold, reduced sweating, slow heart rate, early fatigue and tired feeling, swelling of face and legs, irregularities of menstruation, difficulties in speech, inability to concentrate etc. Solution is to take Thyroxine tablets daily, dose is based on body weight and TSH levels.
