In general the area below the umbilicus(Belly button) is the pelvis. In female patients pelvic organs include the uterus and ovaries. In males it is usually the prostate. In my center if anyone asks for ultrasound of abdomen, the entire abdomen and pelvis are tested. It may differ in other centres. I know of few scanning centres where if abdomen is asked, they do not scan the pelvis. Usually when only pelvic ultrasound is asked, it is for gynaecological problems or for checking for pregnancy. The rest of the abdomen is not scanned.
