I'm 25 years old female. My two chewing teeth in lower jaw broke by side view due to chewing candy in my childhood. On one side one tooth have a crown since 5 years with no rct and I experience no pain there on other side of jaw the other tooth have only ceramic filling with no rct and no pain. But my dentist is suggesting that root canal treatment is compulsory before crown placement. But I have no pain in both teeth. Doc started rct on tooth with filling now I have much pain. I always wanted to avoid rct as it involves deep piercing. Doc convinced me after my hesitation for rct. I only wanted crown without rct. Please advise my decision for rct was correct or wrong. I too scared now for future of my tooth.

Getting rct done before crown is always advisable as it largely reduces chances of future pain. I too avoid giving crown on teeth without rct.

Hi, kindly understand that for a crown to be placed, your teeth has to be shaped in such a way to create space for crown. Teeth will be shaped ,that there are are 2 mm space between the adjacent teeth and also between your lower and upper teeth. This is the thickness of crown to stay strong. In cases of teeth that has been fractured or already had a filling there are chances where your nerves might have been previously irritated, so when we reduce more on such teeth, the nerves of teeth can hyperreact and after putting a crown on such teeth may cause problems in the future ,if not now. Consider after putting crown without rct, when the problem comes your dentist may have to cut the crown, break it, remove and do the root canal procedure. U have to then place a new cap again. Hence it is an effort loss for your dentist and economic loss for you in terms of cap. So to ensure that there is no problem in the future your dentist has recommended root canal treatment before capping to be done. It is quite normal for a person to have pain after the root canal treatment. Your tissues will undergo healing process and that will show up as a pain. You might have been prescribed medications for a few days .kindly take those prescribed medicines and report your dentist if the pain is severe. Or lasting more than a week.
