I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression in 2012, recently my psychiatrist diagnosed me with agoraphobia, I have been on medication like fluvoxamine, venlafaxine, petril md, for about 4 to 5 years, I have had aweful side effects by using them, so from past 2 years i'm completely out of any allopathy medications, I have agoraphobia as i'm unable to go out anywhere, I ger scared of flyovers, traffic, crowded places, open spaces, i'm house bound most of the time, how ever i'm under therapy now with my neuro - psychiatrist. I recently read an article about a supplement called" 5htp".i want to know if I can take it? As it's a natural serotonin supplement. I am on nitrest tablet 10 mg half tablet at night, and also I take fish oil morning and night, I also take one multivitamin tablet, my question is that, can I take the 5htp supplement to help my anxiety? Or is it dangerous to take it?

5 htpn does the same as fluvoxamine and venlafaxine but is more costly and marketed as food product. But the final outcome and side effects are similar. Agoraphobia is a life long disorder and is treated by ssri or snri. As you said they do carry side effects which you can discuss and minimise I consultation with your psychiatrist. You may not take treatment, and tolerate symptoms, it is upto you. Fish oil and multivitamins have no role in the disorder at best act as placebo. Also, there is no official medical council degree called neuro-psychiatry, it is either psychiatrist or neurologist. You can combine cognitive behavior therapy, which has definitive evidence. Good luck.
