Dear Doctor, I'm 18 years old. I'm quite sad these days. I have mood swings. Sometimes i cry and laugh at the same time while I'm alone. I even started to hate everything around me. I love to listen to the music, playing guitar and painting. But these days. I don't want to do any of these. I just want to alone. My friends told me that I'm negative these days. I don't know what to do. I don't want to be negative. Please help.

Dear, It is natural to have minor mood swings. However avoid focusing on the negativities as whatever you focus on, tends to get energised. Take an effort to recognise the 'low' phase and pro-actively and constructively make yourself busy at that time. Little practice and you will master the art of remaining in a good mood on an ongoing basis.

Don't neglect this condition. It could be the indication of a more severe problem. Visit a counselor and let her/him assess your situation to recommend a visit to a psychiatrist, if necessary. This is the late adolescent stage of your development and is the last chance to resolve any lurking issues that have remained dormant till now. If you had some disturbances earlier, it is an indication that it is really serious. Although it is looking for a resolution, you could enter adulthood with a permanent negative feature that will torment you for a long time in life, if you do not sort it now. Don?t feel ashamed but seek help soon because in adolescence it is easier, if you cooperate. Also make a complete history of the family, and your life since you were conceived. Any history of inherited traits up to your grandparents in terms of mental diseases, mental retardation, alcoholism, suicide, depression etc. Will help to trace genetic contributions. Ideally don?t be alone for long times and be engaged in interesting activities. Socialize a lot but don?t put too much pressure on yourself. Certainly do not increase stress. Proper exercise, diet and sleep will help tremendously.
