My wife 37 was taking fludac 10, 1 capsule at night for treatment of depression and she has been taking it for last 1 year. Is it safe to take it long term? Can it be stopped without any issues? She is putting on weight gradually is it due to this medicine? Thanks,

Dear lybrate-user, depending on the diagnosis, fludac can be given for long term when benefits are there. Since she is only on 10 mg fludac, it can be stopped immediately without any withdrawal symptoms. But remember in certain types of depression, the depressive symptoms may return. Usually fludac does not cause any weight gain. Again remember, people put on weight in depression - may be she is still under depression due to an inadequate dose of fludac. Please consult your psychiatrist for it.

Hello Friend, Good that you are seeking a help here. Depression and weight gain are interlinked. Also long term usage of medicine can cause some side effects which can cause withdrawal symptoms if stopped abruptly. Take the advice of your consulting doctor. In the meantime, allow your wife start few non medicine treatment in parallel to handle the side effects as well as handle depression in natural way. Like following few lifestyle changes, psychotherapies or mindset changes excersise, relaxation techniques, dietary changes, excersise routines etc. Be positive. She will be alright soon. If medicines are taken under expert supervision then you should not worry about the side effects. Just openly discuss the issues you face with your psychiatrist. Some people have a tendency to overeat or eat fatty food when they feel depressed. When people feel depressed they tend to become less active. Both of these issues may result in weight gain.
