The causes of dissociative disorders are complex. There is usually a history of trauma, usually abuse in childhood. However, not all trauma survivors have it, so the diagnosis is not a simple cause and effect. If the relationship with your parents or guardians was insecure and you were abused, then you are more likely to use dissociation to protect yourself from the trauma. The combination of an insecure relationship, trauma and dissociation can result in a complex dissociative disorder. The purpose of treatment and self-help is to increase the links between your feelings, thoughts, perceptions and memories, and to help you develop a sense of empowerment. This will make you feel more complete and reduce inner disassociation that you may be experiencing. You need to find a counselor who knows to treat this disorder and it is usually a long term kind of therapy. Although there is no medication to treat this disorder but it helps to take medicine for depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc., which come along with this condition. In the therapy much of the focus is made on the discrepancy of what the person perceives, which is usually distorted, and the therapist will help you make the connections to the real facts, to the real person, to the true identity, and with constant dialogue and trust the facts can be separated from the distortions. Emotional therapy plays a very important role, especially related to fear. Exercise, good sleep, and a healthy diet is highly recommended.
