My hemoglobin is 17. PCV is 52. And blood smear report is RBC is normocytic normochromic morphology with high hematocrit pattern. Overall impression is: normocytic normochromic blood picture. Is this normal? I had GB syndrome (Nerve weakness). Is this report indication of polycythemia?

Hi, High Hematocrit can be due to a number of causes. I am presuming you had GB Syndrome recently. It will be worthwhile knowing what treatment you had received for the same because few of the drugs can cause an elevated RBC count. I would suggest get in touch with a hematologist if you are having any of the following symptoms: dizziness, blurred vision, frequent non-relenting headaches. Else, wait for a couple of months and repeat the Hb% monthly to monitor. Drink at least 3-4liters of water to keep yourself hydrated. In case the Hemoglobin shows a serial increase, then we may need to run a few tests. Else you should be Ok. Hope that helped.
