Hi, I had surgery done for inguinal hernia back in 2009. The mesh was placed. After a year I started going to gym but due to personal reasons had to quit again. Now after so many years I have again started going to the gym. I want to reduce my stomach so I am working on abs doing crunches. My question is that can doing abs exercise effect my hernia again. Is it safe to do abs exercise as I want to loose my belly fat.

Belly fat is not reduced by abs exercises. They only provide some toning and shape. Belly fat/body fat is burnt/reduced by intense aerobics/cardio based exercises. If doctor has advised against putting pressure on abs, then it's better to do cardio based exercises which will help you reduce your fat and weight. Also you need to manage your diet & calories intake.

YES, you can do abs under supervision of a instructor, gradually from 4-5 at a time. Since the mesh has been fibrosed no need to worry.
