In periodontitis there is loss of supporting tissues surrounding the teeth which includes gum tissue, periodontal ligaments and alveolar bone forming the teeth sockets. This loss is caused by the toxins released by the buildup bacterial plaque. All this leads to lossening of the teeth, however even severe cases can be treated thereby preventing the loss of teeth. A radiograph will reveal your overall periodontal status. 1.) The first step is to get scaling and root planing done. In this plaque is removed from teeth surfaces and smoothening of root surface roughness to prevent bacterial recolonization. This allows gums to heal and reattach to teeth surface properly. Antibiotics like doxycycline helps improve the condition. 2.) Flap surgery is done by folding back the gum tissue and debridement of infectious bacteria followed by smoothening the damaged areas of the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth. This allows reattachment of gum tissue to the healthy and clean bone. 3.) Bone grafting is done in areas where bone has been destroyed by periodontal diseases. Bacteria and toxins are debrided and then natural or synthetic bone in the area of bone loss is placed along with tissu stimulating proteins to effectively regrow bone and tissue. 4.) Maintenance is a very vital part after the treatment. You need to get periodically checked and scaling every 3 months. Good oral hygiene needs to be maintained at home and daily mouthwash is a good practice.
