Dad was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma 2 years ago. Doctors removed tumor by partial nephrectomy. Tumor was limited to kidney. Biopsy report shows that sections from tumor in upper pole including perinephric fat, renal fascia and capsule. Adjacent kidney show changes of chronic pyelonephritis. Gerotas fascia, fat, renal capsule are free of tumor. No lymohovascular perineal invasion seen. There are two separate tumor at upper pole and lower pole size of 2.5*2*1 cm, lower pole 4.5*3*2 cms. Tumor facility is. Multifocal. We are continuing followup for every 6 months which includes CT and blood tests. All the reports are normal till now. Is there any chance of spreading the cancer to other body parts? Is it dangerous/fatal? Is there any special test to know exactly whether the cancer will comeback or not?

Hello lybrate-user, I am a little confused with your question but as I understand your father had a partial nephrecyomy 2 years back post which he has been doing well. The other tumors that you are talking about. Are these also renal cell carcinomas or are they reported as renal cysts. I would like to see your latest CT scans to give you a better response. In general renal cell carcinoma can recur or spread even after the primary tumor has been removed. A close monitoring with chest x ray and usg and ct scan if required is necessary to diagnose this early. A event free interval of 5 years usually is sufficient as post this duration the risk of recurrence or metastasis is low. You can contact me personally through Lybrate for further comments on your case.

Now only regular follow-up protocol is needed which can detect any recurrence at earliest point. No special test is needed to diagnose the recurrence early. Renal cell cancer if operated timely has normally have excellent prognosis. All the very best. Stay blessed.
