A diabetic person should be consuming a balanced diet which includes carbs, proteins & fats in proper proportion like everyone else. However, certain precautions needed are avoid sweets, direct sugar, deep fried foods, fruits like mangoes, grapes, chikkoos and bananas. Also avoid smoking and alcohol. You should always use whole grain flour, (no maida), millets can be added to the food (bajra, ragi, jowar etc), include soya flour in the diet to provide additional proteins particularly for vegetarians. Fruits like oranges, papaya, pomogranate, apple, pear, guava etc are good. Always eat less quantity at a time. Divide your total daily intake in to 5 portions and consume at a gap of 2 t o 3 hrs. But total intake should not exceed the prescribed amount.
