Snoring - Know The Primary & Secondary Type!

An estimated of 10 percent or more children snore for more than 1 night. Snoring results from the obstruction of breath when the air makes its way through the mouth. The air passage of the throat through which the air goes in and out causes the tissue to vibrate causing snore. The sound of the snore totally depends on the amount of air passing through the mouth and the frequency at which the throat is vibrating. Children above the age of three years tend to snore when they are deep in sleep.

Primary and secondary snoring:
Children who are otherwise healthy should not have a snoring problem unless there is some health disorder. However, if loud snoring is observed in otherwise a perfectly healthy kid, seeking medical help is a wise thing to do. In general, primary snoring is defined as a condition which is not associated with other sleep-related disorders such as lung disorder, OASS, inability to sleep for a longer duration etc.

Other possibilities:
It is estimated that close to three percent of the children suffers from breathing problem while sleeping. OSAS is a condition which is characterised by pauses in breathing and gasps along with loud snores. There could be instances where a kids’ muscle relaxes way too much obstructing the air to pass through. The body and the brain are both alerted at this stage. As soon as the brain sends a signal, the body wakes up. Thus, most kids suffering from this disorder are not able to sleep well and tend to feel tired throughout the day.

Common causes of sleep apnea:
Sleep apena is a major cause of snoring. It can be caused because of allergies, obesity, GERD etc. In children sleep, apnea can also be caused by tonsil. Since the tonsil size of children less than 7 years of age tends to be bigger than adult individuals, it causes snoring related problem. Swollen tonsils not only obstruct air but creates other health related problems as well.

Symptoms of sleep apnea during the day and night:

  1. Loud snore
  2. Snorts, gasps, pauses during sleep
  3. Heavy sweat during sleep
  4. Social and behavioural problems
  5. Failure to get up in the morning
  6. A nasal voice
  7. Easily irritated, cranky and aggressive

Relief measure:
The first thing a that a doctor does is a physical exam followed by observing the symptoms of a kid. Primary snorting can be addressed by physical exercise, counselling and breathing exercise. A primary headache is caused by problems with or overactivity of pain-sensitive structures in your head. A primary headache isn't a symptom of an underlying disease.

What are the causes and triggers?

The three most common causes of a primary headache are:

  1. Cluster headache
  2. Tension-type headache
  3. Migraine

Some primary headaches can be triggered by lifestyle factors, including:

  • Alcohol, particularly red wine
  • Certain foods, such as processed meats that contain nitrates
  • Changes in sleep or lack of sleep
  • Poor posture
  • Skipped meals
  • Stress

Doctors focus on determining whether a headache has another cause. They also check for symptoms suggesting that a headache is caused by a serious disorder. If no cause is identified, they focus on identifying which type of a headache is present.

Tips that could help before seeking consultation:

A headache can be a symptom of a serious condition, such as a stroke, meningitis or encephalitis. Go to a hospital emergency room or your local emergency number if you have the worst headache of your life, a sudden, severe headache or a headache accompanied by:    

  • Confusion or trouble understanding speech
  • Fainting, drowsiness, confusion
  • High fever, greater than 102 f to 104 f (39 c to 40 c)
  • Numbness, weakness or paralysis on one side of your body
  • Stiff neck
  • Trouble seeing, speaking or walking
  • Nausea or vomiting (if not clearly related to the flu or a hangover)

If people with none of the above symptoms or characteristics start having headaches that are different from any they have had before or if their usual headaches become unusually severe, they should call their doctor.

With everything requiring a computer to execute, more and more people end up looking at the computer screen for hours on end. This could range anywhere from a couple of hours to really long hours like 16 to 18. The effect of is a group of symptoms, which are collectively known as computer vision syndrome or CVS (syndrome means a collection of symptoms). Also, prints can be pinned to the workstation when something is being typed, so constantly looking up and down while typing is avoided.
  2. Screen type: Move away from the older tube-style monitor with an LCD screen, which is easier on the eye. Check the computer settings so that brightness, contrast, and font size and shape and contrast are altered to suit your convenience. Ensure you are not requiring to strain to read.
  3. Alter the lighting: Look around you, and ensure there is adequate lighting with no glares on the monitor from surrounding windows or bright lights. A glare filter on the monitor is an effective way to manage this.
  4. Rest your eyes: Follow the 20-20-20 rule, with a 20-second break every 20 minutes where you look at something 20 feet away.
  5. Keep them moist: Blink your eyes constantly to ensure there is enough moisture. Eye drops can be used if required additionally.
  6. Frequent breaks: Not just your eyes, this also reduces strain on the neck and the back.
  7. Regular eye checkups: An annual visit, especially after 40, is a must for optimal eye health.

Our kidneys are responsible for filtering blood in order to remove all the toxic waste and then clear them out through urine. These tiny filters are known as glomeruli. Like any other organ, the functioning of the kidneys could be affected due to acute reasons, which can lead to accumulation of toxins in the body.

This can be due to either age, injury, infection, or other diseases. Acute infection of the kidneys causing glomerulonephritis is a very common condition. Read on to know more about its types, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.


  1. Can be acute or chronic. Most acute cases follow an episode of viral or bacterial infection like skin or throat infection. Children are more likely to develop this compared to healthy adults. When presenting with reddish urine, it is always important to ask if there was a recent episode of throat or skin infection (bacterial or viral). A positive answer should lead to a suspicion for glomerulonephritis
  2. Can occur as a separate infection or as a part of other infections like a bladder infection, etc.
  3. Diabetics are more prone to develop chronic glomerulonephritis
  4. People with autoimmune diseases like lupus can also develop the chronic variety
  5. Vascular conditions like polyarteritis which affect multiple blood vessels also can lead to glomerulonephritis

One of the most common symptoms includes the release of blood into the urine, which gives it a cola colour. This red-tinged urine is one of the most obvious symptoms of glomerulonephritis

  1. Fluid retention can lead to swelling of the legs, hands, and face
  2. Higher levels of blood pressure
  3. Chemically, there could be increased amount of protein released into the urine, and urinalysis will reveal higher amounts of protein in the urine

As it can be asymptomatic, it can go untreated and can cause:

  1. Acute kidney failure
  2. Chronic kidney disease
  3. High blood pressure

Diagnosis: The chronic condition can go unnoticed due to lack of symptoms.

  1. If the patient complains of red or foaming urine, a urinalysis should be done. This would indicate blood cells, increased protein levels, and increased creatinine levels.
  2. Blood tests would indicate higher creatinine and BUN levels
  3. Imaging studies (CT scan or x-rays) can be done in chronic cases to identify the extent of kidney damage
  4. In some cases, biopsy may be done


  1. Acute cases may subside on their own or may require a course of antibiotics
  2. Associated conditions like autoimmune disorders, diabetes, vasculitis, should be treated
  3. Long-term kidney failure patients may require dialysis or transplant to restore kidney function.

With recent lifestyle changes, more and more people, younger in age, are falling prey to heart attacks. While some silently suffer the attack during their sleep and never wake up, others have symptoms which they dismiss as acidity or muscular pain and ignore them. There are multiple media programs that are trying to create awareness about how to identify a heart attack. If done at the right time, there is a good chance that the person can be saved.

What is a Heart Attack?

The blood vessels gradually narrow, reducing the blood flow to the target organs. This reduces the efficiency of the target organ, and if this happens to be the heart, it is known as a heart attack. The area that should ideally receive blood does not, leading to its “death.” If the damage is not severe, it can be reversed. However, if this attack happens in one of the critical areas of the heart, it can even be fatal.

Symptoms to watch for: Very few attacks happen suddenly. Most start slowly and progress, and if identified on time, a life can be saved.   1. Chest discomfort: There is a central pain which is constant, nagging, and has a squeezing like sensation. This causes discomfort and most often, this pain is in the center of the chest area, which lasts for just a few minutes. Sometimes the pain can go and come back. This pain radiates down into the arm, up into the neck area, and also into the jaw and is almost always indicative of a heart attack.

  2. Short of breath: With chest pain, there is always shortness of breath which the person will experience. This is due to reduced oxygen levels in the body.

    • Associated symptoms include fatigue, exhaustion, nausea, dizziness, light-headedness.

    • There is almost always profused sweating where the person breaks into a cold sweat.

    • If the attack happens during sleep, the person may be snoring and may feel as if something is choking his airway.

    • Due to reduced return of blood from the peripheral organs, there could be swelling of the feet and ankles.

  3. Irregular heart beat: If there is irregular heart beat (palpitations) very often, talk to your doctor about it.
