Regards Lybrate user. Flatfoot is common in about 12-14% of population. Flatfoot may be present from childhood or may develop. Flat foot from childhood is mostly stable & does not change much over years. However, if it was developed over a period of time, it could be due to poor muscle coordination of foot and ankle muscles, improper footwear, poor posture etc. Usually flat foot becomes painful when the compensation by the body reaches a threshold level, beyond which the body fails to compensate and just starts to complain. One needs to address the concern, much before that stage arises. Every job has an innate problem of its own. Some jobs require long standing or sitting or sitting cross legs, some jobs needs weights to be lifted or just repeated activity at very high speeds. Choosing a job and staying with the job requires one to adjust to the physical demands put on one. One basic thing to remember is, any job needs small breaks in between for one to move, stretch oneself, change positions. The often body positions or movements are performed, the better for you as an employee. Standing can impose high stresses on joints, muscles of the lower limb. Imagine a stack of bricks, if stacked properly needs no external force but if it is stacked haphazardly, then it has risk to fall, so needs some force to keep it the way it should be. Similarly, when the bones of body and leg are ideally aligned (standing straight/erect), muscle forces are lesser. In standing, the body fluids may tend to gravitate (that means, goes down due to gravity) and lead to swelling if the leg and foot muscles do not work appropriately or are weak. Ensure you move regularly, or just in standing, try to raise yourself up on the toes or on the heels (a few times every 20-30 minutes). That would ensure the fluids go back into the circulatory system.
