I am 25 years old boy from india. I have severe depression and social anxiety for last 17 years. I only started talking medicines last 4 years ago. I tried almost all medicines but not helped. Previous week a doctor give me clonazepam 0.5 mg. One 0.5 mg tablet at morning and two 0.5 mg tablets at night. In just 5 days my social anxiety is very much improved. Shyness also decreased dramatically. Why clonazepam is helping me fast. Please give a answer.

The prescription is good for you and that is what matters. It is for your anxiety. Some medicines work better with some people and some work better with others. Even the dosage varies from individual to individual. 17 years ago you would have been only 8 years old! that means there were some childhood issues that may have gone unnoticed and are disturbing you. And in your list of medications but not mentioned in your statement includes licab 400 mg, which is for treating bipolar depression primarily. This is indicative of a more serious problem and I advise you to immediately go for some intensive counseling. You must comply with all the medical prescriptions and work in tandem with a counselor for a long time and learn coping skills and techniques to handle the daily challenges you will face. There are certain adaptations that will suit you during the elation phase and there are certain behaviors that are required during the depressed phases. In the meantime, you can do certain things that will give you benefits anyway. Emotional therapy will alleviate a lot of the problems faced in this condition because it is a mood disorder. You need to particularly look at your levels of anger both for its reasonableness and to express it in an appropriate manner. I suspect that much of this anger may have origins in early childhood that you may never be aware of now. Talk to your parents and explore that angle. This information will help the counselor too. Also, you will need to check whether there is any genetic factor involved. You must exercise regularly, eat healthily and sleep normally too. If your motivation and cooperation are good much can be achieved. You must have a time-structured schedule filled with interesting and reasonable activities and it must be monitored for compliance and delivery. The reason I say this is that many times you will be inclined to have grandiose notions and confidently believe that you can do without the medication. This will set you back many months in the treatment and delay and sabotage the recovery: forewarned you are forearmed. If this combination of medication with therapy is maintained for at least three years without any episodes or breakdowns, it is possible to taper the medication in consonance with the doctor.

Dear Sharath, Clonazepam is a good anxiolytic. That helps to reduce your anxiety in social situations. But it is a benzodiazepine for short term use. Pick up some social skills and stop clonazepam gradually by reducing the dose. All the previous medicines might be antidepressants. They take 2-3 weeks to act and also at certain dose. You would have got relief if you would have continued and increased to an adequate dose. You will not get immediate relief - but gradual relief will last longer and you will not become dependent on it. Beware of benzodiazepines!

It s a benzodiazepine which acts on anxiety quickly (like paracetamol for fever), but not recommended for long term use, because of dependence potential and side effects of benzos are likely on continued usage. SSRIs or SNRIs act on the neurotransmitters in the mind causing anxiety and combining with cognitive behavioral therapy is ideal for long term treatment. Good luck

Madam, clonazepam as we know is a benzodiazepine. All benzodiazepines have a calming effect on brain but they come with a warning of potential dependence. You will need to be in constant touch with psychiatrist as medication for social anxiety needs to be adjusted for a patient frequently to come to optimal dose. Benzodiazepines are only for short term use.

Hello, clonazepam acts very quickly on anxiety but is not a definite treatment for it. It will help in initial period but will stop acting after sometime and moreover it is addictive. The right treatment for you is you take ssri like tab escitalopram 10 mg in night time along with clonazepam. Subsequently dose of clonazepam will be reduced and eventually stop and escitalopram will be continued. P.s. Do not take clonazepam for more than a month and keep on decreasing the dose every week.
