Hi doc, my 45 days old son is around 4.2 kg and his birth weight is 3.4 kg. Doc told his weight gain is too slow. I am on breastfeeding. He is around 56 cm in height. I am really worried. He is peeing and pooping. He looks quite active and normal. I am really confused. Please suggest whether I need to introduce formula or other supplements for his weight to peek.

Hi lybrate-user usually the baby loose weight for initial week and regain weight and almost equalise birth weight at 10 days of life after that baby must gain at least 20 gms per day for initial 3 month of life. You baby is 3.4 kg at birth and he should gain at least 700 gms (35*20) after 10th day of life which makes 4.1 kg. Your baby is 4.2 kg which is absoultly normal. Do not worry at all if your baby is perfectly fine passing urine at least 6-8 times a day than there is no need to add formula. You must remember breast feed is best feed and you cannot replace it with anything.
