People with a fixed hernia may have constant chest pains or a feeling of tightness in the chest cavity. Whether or not you need a surgery depends on the size of your hernia and the severity of your symptoms. Open surgery requires a longer recovery process. Laparoscopic surgery has a much shorter recovery time, but the risk of your hernia reoccurring is higher. More detailed discussion is required to conclude my answer.
