SIDS or crib death refers to the sudden death of a healthy looking infant while he/ she is asleep. This may come as a shock to the child’s parents and they must seek emotional support and counseling if required. There is no specific reason for SIDS but one or more factors may be responsible for it. Children suffering from brain abnormalities or respiratory infections and having low body weight are more prone to SIDS than other infants. Parents must avoid smoking and mothers must avoid alcohol consumption to keep their baby healthy. It is important to put a child on his/her back when asleep to prevent suffocation.
HOW IS SIDS DIAGNOSED?
Your baby's bed must be firm and should not have any fluffy covers or toys as it may interfere with his/her breathing.
